Volume 2, Number 4
April 15, 1992

The intent of this network is to inform interested parties of impending pesticide use cancellations and to afford those parties the opportunity to affect decision made by the pesticide registrants in concert with EPA. To the best of our knowledge the uses mentioned below will not appear on any label registered by the EPA following their expected cancellation.

methyl parathion

In the January 30, 1992 issue of this network it was indicated that the use of methyl parathion on a number of commodities was not being supported by Cheminova, the basic registrant. While this was true, the use of methyl parathion on a number of these same commodities is being supported by Elf Atochem, a formulator, on their Penncap-M Microencapsulated Insecticide label. The current situation is that the use of methyl parathion is not being supported by either the basic registrant, Cheminova, or by Elf Atochem (Penncap-M) for the following uses: beets (red), clover, cucumbers, eggplant, forests (pine), forests (mosquito control), garlic (SLN), gooseberries, hops, kohlrabi, melons, peppers, pumpkins, rutabagas, safflower, squash, strawberries, sweet potatoes, and tobacco. Also, Elf Atochem plans to support the crops currently on the Penncap-M label (except artichokes and tobacco); in addition the following crops currently on the Penncap-M label which are being dropped by Cheminova: almonds, apricots, citrus, Christmas (pine) trees, corn (pop), peanuts, pecans, and walnuts.

anilazine (Dyrene)

Miles, Inc (formerly Mobay Corporation) has petitioned EPA to cancel all uses of anilazine (Dyrene) due to cost of data for reregistration. Uses will be lost on celery, cucumber, gladiolus, green onion, lawns and turf, potato, strawberry, summer squash and tomato. The company is requesting EPA to allow one year from January, 1992 to sell existing stocks.

fluvalinate (Spur)

Sandoz Agro, Inc. has announced that it will not conduct the required aquatic studies for reregistration and plans to voluntarily cancel the use of fluvalinate (Spur 22 EW) on alfalfa (SLN's in ID, NV, OR, WA), asparagus, beets, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, collards, fruit trees, kale, lettuce, nut trees, sugar beets, swiss chard, tobacco, turnips, vineyards. Mavrik 2E Insecticide uses (same as above) were voluntarily cancelled in 1991. Sandoz plans to support the use of fluvalinate (Mavrik Aquaflow Insecticide) on indoor/outdoor ornamental plantings and plantscapes (including greenhouses), turf, trees, shrubs and cuttings. Use of fluvalinate on coffee in Hawaii (24c) and in Apistan Strip products of Zoecon Corporation for use in beehives and beekeeping equipment is not effected by the Sandoz decision.

Ciba-Geigy has announced that it plans to voluntarily cancel the use of simazine (Aquazine 90 WDG Algicide, princep 4G, 80W, 4L and Princep Caliber 90) for all aquatic uses, and on noncropland, asparagus, artichokes and sugarcane.
