The intent of this network is to inform interested parties of recent or impending pesticide use cancellations and tolerance revocations. To the best of our knowledge the uses mentioned here, unless otherwise indicated, will not appear on any label registered by the USEPA following their expected cancellation. We would recommend that you express any concerns or questions you may have to the contact mentioned below or your NAPIAP State Liaison Representative. If you wish to contact us at USDA, our phone number is (301) 504-8846, and our fax number is (301) 504-8063.

chloroform, epichlorohydrin, ethylene dichloride, hexane, methyl chloride, perchloroethylene, propylene oxide

The USEPA has proposed the revocation of exemptions from the requirement of a tolerance for the seven inert ingredients at the left in or on raw agricultural commodities resulting from the application of pesticide products. The USEPA has found that the data base for these inerts is too deficient for an exemption. Written comments should be sent by 3/15/93 to the Public Response Section of the USEPA with reference to OPP-300258.

methazole (Probe)

Sandoz Agro, Inc. requested voluntary cancellation of methazole-based products in 1992. Methazole is an herbicide that is used on COTTON. The USEPA has accepted this request and announced the cancellation in the Federal Register as of 01-13-93. The cancellation notice also announced an interim restriction on distribution and sale of methazole products based on recently submitted data that demonstrate a potential exposure risk. Products in these marketing channels may become available if ongoing studies to evaluate the potential risk determine exposure levels are acceptable. Existing stocks in the hands of end-users may be used until exhausted.

methyl bromide

The USEPA, under the Bush Administration, proposed under the Clean Air Act that methyl bromide importation and production for domestic use be phased out by January 1, 2000. Under the proposal, a freeze at 1991 importation and domestic production levels will be implemented through 1999, until they cease by the year 2000. Use is not affected. Methyl bromide can be used after the deadline if users or producers can find sources of supply through recycling or existing inventories. Export production will be allowed to developing countries if not re-exported. This proposal has not been published in the Federal Register and may change with the incoming administration.

zineb

The USEPA has established expiration dates for the revocation of all zineb tolerances for residues in or on agricultural commodities. All the remaining pesticide products for zineb were cancelled in 1991. All zineb tolerances for residues in or on agricultural commodities (except grapes for wine use) will expire on 12-31-94. The zineb tolerance on GRAPES designated for wine use will expire on 12-31-97; however, it only applies to grapes grown in 1992 or earlier in the Northern Hemisphere, and 1993 or earlier in the Southern Hemisphere. Written objections should be submitted to the Hearing Clerk and identified as OPP-300268.
