The intent of this network is to inform interested parties of recent or impending pesticide use cancellations, tolerance revocations, and other items of agricultural interest. To the best of our knowledge, the uses mentioned here, unless otherwise indicated, will not appear on any label registered by the USEPA after those uses are canceled. We recommend that you express any concerns or questions you have to the contact mentioned below or to your NAPIAP State Liaison Representative. If you wish to contact us at USDA, our phone number is 301-504-8846, our fax number is 301-504-8063, and our email address is ksmith@asrr.arsusda.gov.
EPA's congressionally mandated pesticide reregistration program currently is expected to reach completion by the year 2004. This comprehensive reevaluation of pesticide safety is required for those pesticide active ingredients initially registered before November 1, 1984. Presently, 121 of 405 REDs (Reregistration Eligibility Decision Documents) have been completed. Each RED summarizes one or more of the 590 active ingredients that are being reviewed. About 40 REDs are expected to be completed each year until the completion of the program. Thus far, only 46 of the 151 important food group REDs (List A) have been completed. We will be reviewing the status of those registered agricultural pesticides with unsupported uses that are nearing completion of this process. When REDs are issued, we will report any potential losses to Agriculture.

Currently, clopyralid is registered as an herbicide on the following agricultural sites: BARLEY, CHRISTMAS TREES, CORN(FIELD), CROPLAND(FALLOW), GRASSES(SEED CROP), NONCROP AREAS, OATS, PASTURES, PEPPERMINT, RANGELAND, SHELTERBELT PLANTINGS, SPEARMINT, SUGAR BEETS, and WHEAT. It is not registered for use in New York and California. However, new data submissions may allow registration in California. With the help of IR-4, DowElanco plans to obtain registrations shortly on asparagus, and later on pome fruits, stone fruits, cranberries, spinach, canola, and most cole crops.

Griffin Corporation and Helena Chemical Company plan to delete the SUGARCANE uses of fluometuron from their labels due to the cost of reregistration. These are the last sugarcane uses registered for fluometuron. Fluometuron is still registered and supported for its remaining use on COTTON. Helena Chemical Co. and Griffin Corp. are willing to consider supporting the sugarcane registration if someone is willing to bear the costs of reregistration. Otherwise, the sugarcane deletion will become final on the Helena product on 2/15/96 and later on the Griffin product.

The USEPA has proposed the revocation of the residue tolerances of hexazinone for EGGS, POULTRY (FAT, MEAT, MBYP), and PINEAPPLES (FORAGE AND FODDER). EPA does not feel these tolerances of this herbicide are necessary. The maximum residue expected in poultry tissues would be .005 ppm, an order of magnitude below the limit of detection, resulting in no detectable residues. Pineapple fodder and forage are no longer regulated by EPA (since the Agency does not consider pineapple fodder and forage to be produced in significant quantities to warrant regulation). Send comments, with reference to OPP-300405, to the Public Response Section of EPA by 2/5/96.

The USEPA has proposed the revocation of the tolerance of maleic hydrazide in or on CRANBERRIES. The use of this plant growth regulator on cranberries was canceled in 1991. Before that time, this use was registered as a Special Local Need (24c) in the States of Massachusetts and New Jersey. EPA believes that since 1992 there has been little or no useage of MH on cranberries and therefore this tolerance is unnecessary. Furthermore, if this residue tolerance is to be maintained, EPA needs better data on the nature of the residue. Send comments, with reference to OPP-300405, to the Public Response Section of EPA by 2/5/96.

The USEPA has proposed the revocation of the residue tolerances of oryzalin for COTTONSEED, BARLEY GRAIN, WHEAT GRAIN, PEAS, POTATOES, and SOYBEANS. The uses resulting in these tolerances have not been registered since publication of the 1987 registration standard for this herbicide. EPA has sufficient data to ascertain the adequacy of the established tolerances on these commodities. However, if no party indicates support for the underlying uses of oryzalin during the comment period of this proposed rule, EPA will issue a final rule revoking these tolerances. Send comments, with reference to OPP-300405, to the Public Response Section of EPA by 2/5/96.
